Our Process

We can sharpen the following sizes.

Player Skates - Sizes between Youth 9 and Adult 13.

Goalie Skates - Sizes between Youth 9 and Adult 10.5

Figure Skates - Most traditional, flat-sided blades. We cannot sharpen multi-piece blades often used in competitive skating.

Previously sharpened skates require fewer passes through the sharpener to maintain blade edges for optimal skating performance.

New skates require additional passes through the sharpener to remove rough, uneven ‘factory edges’ and set the right hollow for a good grip on the ice.

Choosing the right hollow is a personal preference, depending on whether you want more grip or glide.

Player Skates

A 1/2" RoH is considered 'standard' for all players in most skate sharpening shops (e.g. East York Memorial Arena, SportsChek, Canadian Tire, Pro Hockey Life, Play it Again Sports). It is a good starting point for many youth players, offering a balance between grip and glide.

Older players may be more comfortable with a 5/8" RoH (offered as 'standard' for all players at Just Hockey Source for Sports, Leaside Hockey Shop). This RoH provides slightly less grip, but allows for smoother movement on the ice.

We recommend starting with a 1/2" RoH for younger players and moving to a 5/8" as they grow.

Goalie Skates

Depending on the skate sharpening shop, 'standard' RoH's ranges from 1/2" (Canadian Tire) to 5/8" (most SportsChek locations, Just Hockey, Pro Hockey Life, Leaside Hockey Shop). Other shops (e.g. Play it Again Sports, East York Memorial Arena) consider 3/4" as 'standard' for goalies and certain SportsChek locations consider 1" as 'standard' for goalies. It all comes down to personal preference.
